Excerpted from Attending my own Eulogy

May you remember my light in every sunset, sunrise, star, moonlight, raindrop and ray of sunshine. In all of the little things that have brought me insurmountable joy, I'm beside you. I'm there when the birds sing, the waves crash, the sun shines on your skin. I'm there in every tequila soda, in every delicious meal, in every fresh manicure.

I've always been a mirror. Even as I turn to dust, that's what I will always be. My spirit lives on through the unencumbered joy of everyone I love. It lives on through the ringing of laughter, new adventures, new chapters and living a complete life. That is my one and only dying wish: for you all to live, fully alive.

As for me, rest easy knowing I'm free. Free from the binds of this disease; relinquished from the purgatory between the living and the dead. No more pain. No more disappointment. No more fear. Although I am no longer breathing, this is my oxygen.

I never quite understood how young people could go to a better place, but I get it now. This world was not meant for everyone to grow old, gray and wrinkly. Some must be set to fly prematurely, so the rest of us can learn, grow, and develop wings of our own.

Of one thing I am sure: not everything happens for a reason. But there is a reason to be gleaned from any tragic situation, as long as we choose to uncover it. It's grueling, necessary work, and a testament to the resilience of humanity above all else. So what is the reason we're here?

We're here as a reminder to live boldly, fully, loudly. We're here to transform into the person we always wanted to be. If my legacy can encourage others to grab life by the balls, love deeply, and live tearlessly, that is a life worthy of having been lived and a legacy worthy of leaving.

With profound gratitude,
Kasey
